In 1975, Diep Nguyen boarded a helicopter in order to spend the weekend with her mother. However, as her hometown in Vietnam was overrun by communist forces, the helicopter changed course to the closest territory under US control. Nguyen soon found herself on the deck of a US aircraft carrier as a refugee who didn’t speak a word of English. Today, she has supported numerous NASA projects, including acting as a flight controller for shuttle and space station missions.
