Water Hidden in the Moon May Have Proto-Earth Origin
Water found in ancient Moon rocks might have actually originated from the proto-Earth and even survived the Moon-forming event.
Yesterday, Astrobiology Magazine featured an article on Jessica Barnes’ presentation at the European Planetary Congress (EPSC). Jessica is a research student at the Open University in the United Kingdom, and her dissertation is on geochemical approaches to studying water on the Moon. She was also a summer intern with NASA’s Lunar Exploration Summer Intern program in 2012.
Her new work shows that water found in Moon rocks (like samples from Apollo) could have come from the proto-Earth (basically the cloud of rock and dust that eventually gathered together to form the Earth).
