The radial velocity method
04/19/13

The radial velocity method of exoplanet detection relies on the Doppler effect: when the starlight is red-shifted, it means the star is moving away from us, and when it is blue-shifted it means the star is moving towards us. This effect occurs because a planet doesn’t orbit around a motionless star, but instead the planet and star orbit a common center of mass. Image Credit: ESO
