Carl Woese defined the Archaea domain of life in 1977 by phylogenetic taxonomy of 16S ribosomal RNA. Woese also was the originator of the RNA world hypothesis, which says that early in the history of life RNA may have once performed functions that today are shared by DNA and proteins.
