This image features several layers of crack filling exposed when a chip of Nakhla was examined with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). One layer has a very bumpy surface, and these bumps resemble a fossilized colony of microbacteria. Some of the rounded bumps are preserved at the top of the surface and resemble individual spherical and ovoid-shaped microbes. Others are partially embedded in the underlying matrix.
