Heiberg Island aquifers

Aquifers are active throughout the year in Axel Heiberg Island, even though temperatures drop to minus 50 degrees C during parts of the local winter season. This is due to relatively high-velocity water flows near the surface, which does not permit freezing. This picture is of Little Black Pond, approximately 60 centimeters in diameter.
