3 days to go: Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on the Origin of Life will be held in Galveston, TX. I will be missing this exciting conference so I will be looking out for some post-conference notes (organizers & attendees, hear me out please). 2 evolutionary biology conferences in Europe: Mark your calendars, people: The infamous SMBE conference will be held in Dublin this April. 16th Evolutionary Biology conference will be in Marseilles, in September. 1 important paper: Published by.... |

Too many good papers came out this week, so I am doing the countdown with letters (not numbers) as they are all winners. Enjoy! 1a. Ancient Animals: Erwin et al. present the origination times of early animals (as old as pre-Cambrian) and estimate that the last common animal ancestor (LCAA?) may have lived ~800 million years ago. Results published in the journal Science: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/334/6059/1091.short 1b. Ancient Atmospheres: Scientist from the New York Center for Astrobiology simulate the atmospheric conditions of.... |

If you also think that sharing your research with a bunch of enthusiastic high school students is one of the best things about being a scientist, you will be interested in this London-based online outreach program: “I am a Scientist, Get me out of here! (IAS)” Here is how it works: About three or four times a year, IAS admins announce the application deadline for the interested candidates (aka graduate students and postdocs). If you are selected, the next step.... |

Young folks, (young in spirit: also accepted) don’t miss out the upcoming GRS on the Origin of Life! This one is extra special, because Jack Szostak (you read it right, 2009 Nobel Laureate on Medicine Jack Szostak) will be the keynote speaker! If you ever been to a Gordon Conference, you’ll know what I am talking about… Gordon Conferences are the best! The attendee number for GRC is limited therefore you don’t get lost, subjects are very narrowed and focused so.... |

While Julia, Ariel and Dimitra highlighted very well why studying astrobiology is awesome, an astrobiology lecture series aptly named “Origins” has been initiated by Yale University. I highly recommend attending these lectures if you are interested in learning more on astrobiology. I especially liked how the lectures are announced: [Astrobiology] is a science that has yet to demonstrate that its subject matter exists… However… and hell, is that a big ‘however’! Without further due, here are the list of speakers:.... |

Evolution is referred as the “e-word” in the south… As heart breaking as this may be, it also reflects a reality that us, scientists and educators face on a daily basis. For this particular reason, I am enjoying the bilboards and public transportation vehicles carrying around the announcement of the upcoming exhibition: ”Darwin: Scientist, Naturalist, Serious to do list” at the Fernbank Museum of Atlanta in Georgia. No, I am not kidding, each time I see a bus or a.... |
