engineeringhistory:

Thelma Estrin teaching. Estrin is a pioneer in biomedical computing and one of the designers of the WEIZAC, the first electronic digital computer constructed in the Middle East.

WEIZAC is short for the Weizmann Automatic Computer, and was built by the Weizmann Institute in 1954-1955. WEIZAC is just one in a long list of diverse accomplishments by Thelma Estrin. In 1977 she also named as an IEEE Life Fellow “for contributions to the design and application of computer systems for neurophysiological and brain research.”

There’s also a cool interview with her at: http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Oral-History:Thelma_Estrin_(2002)
